Luke 13:6-9

6 He spake also this parable; A certain man had a fig tree planted in his vineyard; and he came and sought fruit thereon, and found none. 7 Then said he unto the dresser of his vineyard, Behold, these three years I come seeking fruit on this fig tree, and find none: cut it down; why cumbereth it the ground? 8 And he answering said unto him, Lord, let it alone this year also, till I shall dig about it, and dung it: 9 And if it bear fruit, well: and if not, then after that thou shalt cut it down.

Matthew 3:7-10

7 But when he saw many of the Pharisees and Sadducees come to his baptism, he said unto them, O generation of vipers, who hath warned you to flee from the wrath to come? 8 Bring forth therefore fruits meet [suitable] for repentance: 9 And think not to say within yourselves, We have Abraham to our father: for I say unto you, that God is able of these stones to raise up children unto Abraham. 10 And now also the axe is laid unto the root of the trees: therefore every tree which bringeth not forth good fruit is hewn down, and cast into the fire.

Perspective

God's patience shows mercy before his justice. The Lord grants people the opportunity of time before judgement to produce good spiritual fruit.  The Fig Tree represents the Nation of Israel established by the Word of God.  The Lord God came in the flesh, Jesus Christ, ministering and working with Israel for 3 1/2 years to see if the people would repent and believe.  And while some did receive him and believe, many rejected Jesus Christ as the Messiah.  Forty years after crucifying Christ (and the people of Israel said let his blood be on us), they were disbursed, no longer a sovereign nation.   By divine mercy the Lord God delayed justice for nearly 2,000 years.  During WWII the pruning judgement occurred.  Satan tried to destroy the remnant of Israel.  But joy cometh in the morning! Shortly after in 1948, the restoration of the fig tree began and it budded forth in a restored Israel, once again a sovereign nation founded on the God of Abraham.

Matthew 27:24-25

When Pilate saw that he could prevail nothing, but that rather a tumult was made, he took water, and washed his hands before the multitude, saying, I am innocent of the blood of this just person: see ye to it. 25 Then answered all the people, and said, His blood be on us, and on our children.
