This parable is a double-edged sword. On the one hand, Jesus confirms the great promise of translation. In a moment, a twinkling of an eye, we shall be changed. 1 Corinthians 15:52 On the other hand, many are left behind to face the great and terrible time of tribulation of judgment.
Matthew 24:21
For then shall be great tribulation, such as was not since the beginning of the world to this time, no, nor ever shall be.

Each generation since Adam has been allocated time in the wilderness (flesh) to build faith in God's Word (Jesus Christ). By faith, knowing Jesus Christ is the Lord God Almighty, the Elect are always prepared, always ready. It is the Elect's faith in who Jesus is that separates them and qualifies them for rapture. The faithful and wise are rewarded with higher positions in heaven.
Luke 17:34-37
I tell you, in that night there shall be two men in one bed [same church foundation, but a different faith];
35 Two women shall be grinding together [same salvation promise, but each having a different faith]; the one shall be taken, and the other left.
36 Two men shall be in the field [same gospel work, but a different faith]; the one shall be taken, and the other left.
The foolish will not be prepared for the Lord's return, they will miss the translation rapture and will be judged accordingly. See the Sleeping Virgins Parable Matthew 25

In the days of Noah, there was a great witness prior to the judgement. For 120 years Noah was preparing for his escape from the coming judgement. At first, there were surely many who took an interest in what Noah was doing and why. Over a period of time though, they no longer cared. They were busy with their own lives. And no longer took heed to the warning that time was short.
While we will not know the exact day and hour, we will know the season of the Lord's return by watching for the signs given in the Word of God.
1 Corinthians 15:58
Therefore, my beloved brethren, be ye stedfast, unmoveable, always abounding in the work of the Lord, forasmuch as ye know that your labour is not in vain in the Lord.

Ephesians 6:18
Praying always with all prayer and supplication in the Spirit, and watching thereunto with all perseverance and supplication for all saints;

What signs are we to watch for? The Lord Jesus answered this question directly in Matthew Chapter 24 which also aligns with Revelation Chapter 6. Particularly for our generation is the Parable of the Fig Tree within Matthew Chapter 24.
